If you’re lost, it’s comforting to be able to pull out your phone and type in your location. A quick Google Maps search will give you step-by-step directions to get back on track. What if you’re lost in the middle of the desert with no service? How do you find your way then? Sue explored this question on a recent trip to Peru. She learned a lot about navigating without technology, going with the flow, and has a new appreciation for Google Maps!
My experience in the south of Peru cannot be adequately described in words. Our group traveled 4 hours from Lima and lost all cell phone service and GPS along the way. We arrived in a desolate desert, with huge sand dunes as far as the eye could see. I was worried about getting lost and not being able to find my way back, but our dune buggy guides knew exactly where they were going. How did they do it?
If they had dropped us off anywhere along the way, we would have been wandering the desert for 40 days and nights at least. I have no idea how they knew the way, but they did! We made it to our destination safely and without any cell phone GPS. Once we were there we sledded down sand mountains, had a bonfire picnic, and forgot about the digital world. Even though we all felt totally lost without Google Maps, it was a unique and wonderful experience.
It’s amazing how much we rely on Google Maps and GPS services these days. When everything goes as planned, these tools are incredibly helpful. But when you lose service or find yourself in an unfamiliar place, it’s nice to know that you can still get by without them.
This experience in Peru showed me that it’s possible to navigate without technology, and I have a newfound appreciation for Google Maps. Thanks for following our series, SEO Magnified!
